Coeur d'Alene Area Hikes

Tubbs Hill

Location: Next to downtown Coeur d’Alene starting between McEuen Park and the Coeur d’Alene Resort

Situated just outside the city, the Tubbs Hill trail is very popular as it affords quick access to the surrounding wilderness. Several hikers enjoy hunting for secluded swimming areas, and wildflowers flourish in the area during spring. This trail can be accessed nearly year round.

Caribou Ridge Trail
Distance: 4.6 miles roundtrip
Climb: moderate
Difficulty: moderately difficult
Location: Exit State Highway 97 (Lake Coeur d’Alene Scenic Byway onto Forest Road (FR )439 to locate the trailhead

Climbing in elevation from 2,200 feet to 4,000 feet and including four switchbacks, the Caribou Ridge Trail highlights Beauty Creek and Mt. Coeur d’Alene. Hikers will find outstanding vistas of the surrounding mountain peaks and lakes, but little wildlife viewing opportunities exist. Although the trail is named after the caribou, these animals have since migrated farther north into the Idaho Panhandle. Best months for hiking are June through September.

Independence Creek Trail System
Distance: 34 miles roundtrip

Difficulty: moderate to difficult
Location: At Kingston, exit north of Interstate 90 and merge onto Forest Road (FR) 209. Traveling past Lake Pend Oreille, locate FR 258 directly before reaching Honeysuckle Campground and follow it to FR 904. FR 904 leads to the Independence Creek Trailhead.

Partially winding along an early 20th century wagon road, the Independence Creek Trail is situated east of Hayden Lake and was once used to link the Lake Pend Oreille and Lakeview mines with the Independence Creek Valley. Although a 1910 forest fire devastated the area, little evidence remains of this event and the backcountry is filled with a variety of foliage. Trail users will locate several waterfalls and likely view numerous water ousels. All of the trails are open to hikers and horses. Best months for hiking are June through September.
