Idaho’s state horse, the Appaloosa, is the focus of this museum’s exhibits. The spotted, hardy horse draws its name from the Palouse Prairie. When early settlers arrived in the area, these horses dominated the landscape. Thus, many pioneers began referring to the horse as “a Palousey.” Eventually, the title was changed to the horse’s current proper name, Appaloosa. Celebrated by Nez Perce Indians, the Appaloosa is now fondly remembered in the museum’s unique display of historical photos, artifacts, exhibits, and the Appaloosa Hall of Fame. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday year-round with free admission.
