Judge James Ailshie was influential in helping local miners apply for a settlement post office in 1896. Therefore, when it came time to name the town, he chose to honor his baby daughter, Lucile. The small town was the center of mining activity for the McKinley, Blue Jacket, and Crooks Corral mines until 1939. Lucile was also once home to a few heated feuds between sheep ranchers and area cattlemen.
