The Idaho Botanical Garden is a living museum committed to appreciation of gardening, horticulture, and conservation and educating the public on these topics. Situated on 50 acres of land that served as the farm and nursery at the old Idaho State Penitentiary, the once defunct land was turned into beautiful gardens beginning in 1984. Today, visitors will find thirteen different theme gardens: Herb, Rose, Alpine, Contemporary English, Outlaw Field, Butterfly and Hummingbird, Iris, Meditation, Water, Cactus, Peony, Children, and Idaho Native Plants and Outdoor Classroom. The garden is open 9 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday and 10 AM to 6 PM Saturday and Sunday from May through October. November to April, the garden is open 9 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday and 12 PM to 4 PM on weekends.
