Originally dubbed Brownlee by the US Postal Service, Ruthburg began as a mining settlement in 1875. The first post office was established in 1878 and operated until 1909. On April 21, 1881, the community’s residents voted against the name “Brownlee” and adopted the new town name of Ruthburg. Although Ruthburg no longer boasts any residents, its memory lives on in the Idaho state seal where Ruthburg’s mill is pictured.
