| The Corder family ran a stage station near here from 1865 to 1887, and thus the settlement was originally named after them. The post office was established in 1883, and the second postmaster, Authur Mayfield, changed the name of the town in 1887 to honor himself. Today, Mayfield is surrounded by a dry-farming region, and lacks a stable population. |
