Ashton’s American Dog Derby held each winter is rumored to be the oldest dog sled race in the lower forty-eight states. The event dates back to 1917, and during the 1920s and 1930s, nearly 15,000 spectators arrived each year from Idaho and neighboring states to witness the annual derby. Although the race was suspended during World War II and for periods during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, it was revived with enthusiasm in the early 1990s. Today, the weekend event draws large crowds of people cheering on their favorite dog sled driver in 60-mile and 100-mile races. In addition, the event features ice sculpting and a variety of food and craft vendors.
