Kilgore was settled as an agricultural community in 1885 and remained nameless for the first few months of its existence. In 1887, the town finally named itself after General James Kilgore, a gentleman who actively and bravely participated in the 1877 Nez Perce War events. A post office operated here from 1892 to 1965.
